Keating College

Keating College was going to be a new, independent co-educational secondary school, opening in Swanston Street, right in the heart of Melbourne in 2009.  It was going to be concentrating on five core academic areas (English, Maths. Science & Technology, SOSE and LOTE), with a view to preparing students for VCE and University entrance.  However, the school will now not be opening.

OPEN DAY SUNDAY NOVEMBER 16
**NOW CANCELLED**

If you have enrolled for Year 7 next year, then you should have already received an e-mail or phone call to inform you that the school will not be opening.  If you have not received this, please phone us on 9315 6891.

VRQA refuses to register us
The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) has rejected our application to register Keating College.  The school will therefore not be able to open.

The idea behind Keating College was to offer a school that was small, located in the city and focussed on core academic areas.  The VRQA believes that a school cannot just focus on academic areas and must offer extensive programs and facilities in the arts, sport and the like.  They believe that this cannot be done in an office building environment of 600 square metres.

The VRQA’s exact reasons for rejecting our application are:

(1)   We have not provided space for the teaching of materials technology (metalwork, woodwork etc)

(2)   Our facilities for the teaching of Physical Education and Sport are not adequate

(3)   The school would need to lease or purchase larger premises to teach anything beyond one class of Year 7

I still believe that Keating College was a fantastic idea and that we could have developed a wonderful school on the site chosen.  But we must accept the decision of the VRQA.  We have no choice but to abandon the project.  Under Victorian law, no school (public or private) can open without the approval of the VRQA.

I am very sorry that this announcement has come so late in the year.  The VRQA only informed us of their decision yesterday (November 12), even though our application first went in back in March.

All money that has been paid to Keating College will be refunded.  We will be sending out cheques next week.  The “Open Day” that was planned for this Sunday November 16th is now cancelled.  I will still be there, between 10 am and 2pm.  If you would like to discuss things with me face to face, please feel free to come along then.  Or you can ring me on 9315 6891.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Keating College.
